French chef Louis Le Roux was caught on camera breaking a French bread spoon by accident when he tried to break the one he was using to cook his bread.
The incident happened at the restaurant where he works.
He told the Daily Mail: ‘I was on my lunch break, I was at the kitchen, and I went to use the kitchen knife.
It was broken, I had to clean it up.
I had broken a spoon.
‘I didn’t want to leave it, I didn’t have any time, I wanted to go home.’
A video of the incident was uploaded to social media by his wife, Anouk, who said: ‘My husband broke my spoon.
I’m so sorry, I’m in tears.
He broke my french bread spoon.
What an accident.’
She added: ‘He broke the spoon, so I’m really sorry.
I didnt think he was going to hurt himself.
I don’t know why he did it.
‘He told me to do it again, but I didn´t want to do that.
I wanted him to get hurt.
‘We will never be able to forgive him for what he did, because I know that he loves me.’
French police have opened an investigation.
A police spokesman told the AFP news agency: ‘We have opened a criminal investigation.’
The chef said he had been on a break from work after a few weeks off after having surgery.
He was due to work in the US on Saturday, he added.
French media reports say he has been fined €25,000 (£19,000).
